Dynamic Range measurements

Forums:

Hello, I realize tests of cameras and I want to determine the dynamics of the sensor with RawDigger. Here's how I do it:
I shoot a gray and uniform scene. For the first shot I let the camera automatically expose for a VR Exposure = 0. Next i surexpose the target by EV=+7. Next i shoot i dark with the lenscap at 1/1600 s f/16 to have a black and quick exposure

So i have
- 1 shot at EV=0
- 1 shot at EV=+7
- 1 shot darknoise (1/1600 s with lenscap)

I try to mesure the Sony RX10

Can RD be used to select best bracketed exposure.

Forums:

I have RD Exposure and use it to determine which of my bracketed exposures are the best in terms of ETTR. I have a Sigma DP2M and shoot at ISO 100. I believe It's telling me which of the 3 exposures is closest ETTR. I'm now considering using higher ISOs for B&W as I've noticed the camera works well at ISO 800 for B&W. After doing some tests it appears that I can't use RD for determining the best bracket at ISO 800 (or any higher than 100).

EV0 level

Forums:

Your manual mentions that Ev0 in the Histogram defaults to -3 stops below FS. This is about 12.5% of FS. Why this choice? Was it based on a standard metering constant i.e. K=12.5 and the setting point for ISO100, or was it based on a typical amount of clipping headroom?

Since 18% of FS is more common, perhaps an option to change the EV0 default to -2.5 stops below FS should be added.

Dan.
